The power of the pen

As students, the art of writing should be a very vital part of us, but today there is a decline in the art of writing in our society.
Many students today are no longer interested in writing. Students no longer see writing as part of their education and one often hears of students who cannot even write a paragraph correctly.
Many students cannot even write a sentence correctly without abbreviating, such as replacing “come” for “cum” or “to” for “2” and a lot more. This is the reason why I refuse to blame our president for referring to us as “lazy youths”.
Many, as a result of the influence of mother tongue, cannot make good sentences in English. When students are so used to speaking particular other languages in class, they begin to mix such languages with English thereby producing blunders. Technology cannot be blamed for the inability of students to write properly. Most students misplace their priorities. They replace things that should be more of benefit to their education with things that are just there to waste their time.
Nevertheless, the art of good writing can be rejuvenated in Nigeria. To do this effectively, all hands must be on deck. Since discipline and morality begin from home, parents have a lot of work to do. Many parents believe that all a student needs in school is just Mathematics and English text-books with the note-books. This impression is very wrong. There are other books which can help students improve on their writing skills at affordable prizes. Various simple literature texts would do a great deal in improving a student’s writing skills.
Every student has a part to play in promoting the art of writing. If every student makes it a priority to write on his own every day, I believe strongly that the art of writing will be rejuvenated. Students need step by step tutorials on the art of writing. Students should also desist from putting blame on teachers because good students make good schools and not good teachers. Every student should add much more knowledge to what he has learnt in school.

JAMB reschedules printing of exams slip to April 4

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board has postponed the printing of UTME slip to Thursday April 4th, 2019. This was disclosed by the JAMB's Head of Media and Publicity Dr Fabian Benjamin in an interview with newsmen. Recall that the printing of the examination slips was initially scheduled to begin on Tuesday, April 2. According to Benjamin, the postponement follows the suspension of 14 Computer-Based Tests centres due to irregluarities during the conduct of Mock UTME, including an incident where JAMB staff were attacked at one of its centres. He said in view of this, the board needed today and tomorrow to redistribute the candidates affected by these suspended centres who had planned to extort them, defraud and frustrate the system, to centres that are more suitable after which the printing of exam slip can begin on Thursday. He apologised to all candidates of the examination for the inconvenience caused, adding that the board’s intention remained to give its best ...
